Google Dominates Worldwide Search Provider in 2009

Countries Search

ComScore, an online measurement firm has just published their annual report looking at the top 10 internet searches.  Not surprising, the US generated the most searches followed by China and Japan.  Canada ranked ninth with a growth rate of under thirty percent from 2008 to 2009.

The US topped the ranks with a growth rate of 22% in 2009 with 22.7 Billion searches!  Worldwide, if we were to multiply the December searches for a 12 month period, we’re looking at over a trillion searches in 2009!

So who is providing all these searches?

Looking at the numbers, it’s clear that Google dominates the pack.  Out of the 131 billion searches, Google handled 67% of them.  Number two site Yahoo only has a 7% share!  The biggest growth has been Russian search engine Yandex with 91%.  Microsoft’s rebranded Bing took a solid forth spot with a growth spurt of 70% worldwide.  Two other notable sites that comScore included are Facebook and eBay. This illustrates that people are performing their searches apart from “true” search engines.

“The global search market continues to grow at an extraordinary rate, with both highly developed and emerging markets contributing to the strong growth worldwide,” said Jack Flanagan, executive vice president of Reston, VA. –based comScore.  “ If you equate the advancement of search with the ability of humans to cultivate information, then the world is rapidly becoming a more knowledgeable ecosystem.”
